German language courses in Sri Lanka: New opportunities with ÖSD German exams
The language school Studyingermany in Colombo is opening up new opportunities for the people of Sri Lanka to learn German. Through digital options and internationally recognized ÖSD exams, access to German language courses has become more flexible. The focus lies on the quality of teaching – as well as on the dedication of young German teachers.
Learning German in Sri Lanka
The language institute Studyingermany offers German courses at levels A1, A2, B1 and B2, each with a duration of two to three months. It is located in Colombo 05, in the heart of the Sri Lankan capital. At present, it specializes in online German education, but plans to offer in-person classes from late 2025 onward.
The courses are held mainly on weekday evenings so that working professionals can take part as well. The institution also provides a learning management system (LMS) to which all participants have access. There, they find numerous exercises and homework tasks that help them stay on track. Through the Moodle app, learners can easily and affordably access the LMS – enabling them to study German independently in their free time.
The founding idea behind Studyingermany
“When we started out, we wanted to build an institute that would offer high-quality online German education for people across Sri Lanka. We had noticed that many German learners live outside Colombo. They either had no access to quality instruction or had to travel to Colombo to learn German,” says Devin Wickramaratne, marketing and finance manager at Studyingermany. “So we founded the institute to provide online German education for learners all over Sri Lanka.”
For participants taking the ÖSD exam, the institute also offers a discount of around 25%. To ensure the quality of instruction, however, there is a special policy: only students with at least 60% attendance in the language course are eligible for the discount.

A young team of qualified German teachers
The teachers at Studyingermany have a language level ranging from B2 to C1 and hold degrees in German studies or related fields.
The team comes from all parts of Sri Lanka – from Jaffna, Colombo and Kandy. Another important aspect is that it consists entirely of people under the age of 30. With this, the institution aims to empower young people and open up new opportunities for the next generation in the country.
Why become an ÖSD exam centre?
The core motivation for Studyingermany to become an examination centre of the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) arose from an urgent problem faced by many Sri Lankans when trying to take a German exam: there simply were not enough examination slots available for everyone interested.
A new solution for exam candidates in Sri Lanka
After the Covid crisis, Sri Lanka fell into an economic recession, and during this time the number of people migrating abroad increased sharply. Central European countries such as Austria and Germany became particularly popular destinations. However, up to that point, there had been only one single option for taking a German exam. This created numerous difficulties and additional stress for people in Sri Lanka, who were already dealing with challenging circumstances.
On top of this, registration for the exams was only possible in person on a specific day – and exclusively with cash payments. As a result, many people had to spend more than one working day and sometimes travel over five hours just to register for an exam.
Digital registration process at Studyingermany
“We were determined to change that,” says Mr. Wickramaratne, who is also the ÖSD examination official. This led to the digitalisation of the registration process and the creation of a fully online system for exam registration – allowing participants to sign up conveniently from anywhere.
“All Sri Lankans should have equal access to German examinations. ÖSD exams have already brought great joy to many people in Sri Lanka in a very short time.”
