ÖSD exams

The ÖSD provides a wide range of internationally recognized exams that are accepted worldwide by universities, employers, professional bodies and governments. The exams are based on the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), starting at A1 for beginners through to C2 for professional language skills at the highest level.

The exam format was revised in 2019, favouring a format where exam modules may be taken individually or in combination with one another.

  • What is the ÖSD?
The ÖSD is a non-profit organisation who develop internationally recognized exams for German as a foreign or second language. "ÖSD" stands for "Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch" as well as "Österreich, Schweiz, Deutschland" (Austria, Switzerland, Germany). Our exams are communicative- and pluricentric-oriented, cover all levels (A1–C2) corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and incorporate different standard variations of the German language.
  • Who must provide a “proof of language competence” in German before immigration?
Third-country nationals must prove German language skills when applying for a residence permit in Austria for the first time.
  • How much time do I have to submit the proof of language competence in German for the fulfilment of Module 1?
Third-country nationals must fulfil Module 1 of the Integration Agreement within two years of receiving their residence permit.
  • I received my residence permit before 1st of October, 2017. What should I pay attention to?
Module 1: Third-country nationals whose residence permit was issued before the 1st of October, 2017 are obliged to fulfil Module 1 (level A2) of the Integration Agreement. For these people, there is a transitional provision in action until the 30th of September, 2020. This means that people who received their residence permit before the 1st of October, 2017 can fulfil Module 1 either within the framework of the Integration Agreement of 2017, or through the old Integration Agreement of 2011. After the 30th of September, 2020 the fulfilment of Module 1 will only be possible within the framework of the Integration Agreement of 2017. Module 2: For third-country nationals who applied for the residence permit “Daueraufenthalt-EU” or for granting of the Austrian citizenship, before 1st October 2017 the procedure will be completed according to the (old) Integration Agreement from 2011. If in doubt, please contact your local authorities.
